Yurtyzstani citizens are now voting on a draft 2nd Constitution of the Democratic People's Republic of Yurtyzstan, proposed by the Constitutional Committee.
Voting officially opened on February 22 at 12:00 am. The votes are being submitted physically, rather than online as in the last referendum, due to problems with the BallotBin online voting service which prevented the administrative account from being accessed. Voting will close at 11:59 pm on February 24, the date on which Yurtpyitaw Day is celebrated.
The referendum was initially scheduled for January 26, nearly a month earlier; however, it was delayed by the Provisional Government after the Constitutional Committee reported an unceasing stalemate between leftists and rightists, particularly with regards to economic regulation and structure. The proposed Constitution now includes strong circumscription of the power of the Yurtyzstani government as regards the economy -- essentially making a command economy unconstitutional -- and mandates that Yurtyzstan's forthcoming currency, the hming, be backed by a commodity or foreign cash.
If the draft is approved by a simple majority of voting citizens, preparations for an early March parliamentary election will commence; a rejection of the draft will likely result in a delay of several weeks, with the Constitutional Committee organising nationwide informal surveys to guide their re-drafting.
