After more than a month of protests, the Weekend for Workers movement has disbanded.
Oon Em Pyo Iid, Chairman of the Yurtyzstani Workers' Party and member of the Supreme People's Assembly, announced this week that he considered the results of the 2-5 August plenary session to be satisfactory, and that he would stop organising the protests. Today, there were no domestic reports of more protests, and no demonstrators were seen in Yurtpyitaw.
The weekly demonstrations began 6 July, as public opposition to the majority Prosperity for Yurtyzstan coalition's market reforms boiled over. The movement's leaders -- officials of the Yurtyzstani Workers' Party and the Yurtyzstani Committee for the Study of the Juche Idea -- demanded a restoration of Yurtyzstan's suspended welfare programmes and of government workers' salaries, as well as a comprehensive regulatory code to prevent corporate abuse. The Supreme People's Assembly held two plenary sessions and several partial sessions in order to meet these demands; at the most recent session, legislation was finally passed to hasten the adoption of Yurtyzstan's new currency and to fulfil the other demands.
An Okryu Applications representative informed New Light of Yurtyzstan that it will conduct a poll to measure changes in Yurtyzstanis' support for market reforms, and that the results will be posted online.
With the month-long conflict seemingly resolved, Chairman of the Presidium Yurt Kyong-yon may now be able to pursue the cultural development programme at the heart of Prosperity for Yurtyzstan's platform.
